You asked for it, here it is. After months of persistent begging, we were finally able to procure an exclusive interview with graphic designer Conrad Widitz. The interview is as follows:
Q: What kind of strides have you made since January as compared to what you accomplished first semester?
A: Wow, where do I start? There's hardly a comparison. I think I was coasting a bit last semester. This semester, though, I've gotten exponentially better. I figured out some really nifty techniques for adding value and, oh yeah, I actually started making vector images/icons. That's absolutely huge for me, considering my track record I've made with some of creating "boring designs." One other thing is I've figured out how to more properly make things stand out by assigning more contrasting colors to fore/backgrounds. Of course, that's not to say that I have everything totally figured out, but I'm that much closer now.
Q: What has influenced you or your work this quarter (either positively or negatively or both)?
A: Well, for starters, I've been spending an inordinate amount of time on Behance looking at branding as well as flat icon design. The two fit incredibly well together. That's had a wildly good effect on what I've made lately; it's been more attractive and better put together. Nutrition month is a good example of this.
Q: How do you feel about the evolution of your designer “voice”? What tends to be your design style or comfort zone?
A: I'm pretty happy with the way things are going. I'm actually proud of my work now, and it gets better with each thing I make (for the most part). My style is leaning somewhere over the valley of minimalism and the mountainous region of flat design, both of which are located directly next to the majestic city of typography (don't ask me to show you any of these places on a map, because I don't know where they are).
Q: What goals are you setting for yourself in regards to the Odyssey Show? What are your plans?
A: Is the correct answer that I've given it nothing more than a passing thought and that I'm just trying to finish what I've got going on now? Because if it is, boy, I couldn't be more right. This could change as it looms a bit closer, but I pretty much just want to be able to fill the space I'm given and make it as, well, presentable and fitting with my work as possible.
